I’m a Brit who, because of an unwritten pre-nup with his American wife, has resided in Virginia for some five months now. I am working hard to understand this former colony, but the pumpkin orgy has me stumped.
Everything is pumpkin spiced this and ‘official flavor of fall’ that. Some turgid flyer from Trader Joes gives me the chance to buy things I didn’t know even existed in the fall trend of ‘pumpkin spiced’. Beer? Coffee? How very dare you!
Just a point for the Americans. Pumpkin has almost no taste itself. Add sugar and cinnamon and nutmeg and it has a taste - of cinnamon and nutmeg. I do like the way the locals celebrate the seasonality of certain foods, but bloody cinnamon and nutmeg and orange food colouring should NOT be celebrated and certainly should not be adulterating my beer and coffee. Get a grip. Stop being so silly over something that only exists to sell you more tat between ‘summer’ and ‘holidays’.
So. In summary. The Official Flavor of Fall is just the boring bits from a good Christmas cake plus orange, and that is nothing worth celebrating.
